At the end of Catching Fire, there was an arena explosion and Katniss, Finnick and Beetee are rescued from Haymitch and Plutarch. However, Peeta, Enobaria and Johanna were captured by the Capitol. Of course, in the final quote in Catching Fire, Gale tells Katniss that District 12 has been destroyed by bombs. In Mockingjay, Katniss is in District 13 (yup it actually does exist)hasn't seen Peeta in weeks, because he is being tortured by the Capitol. The only times she sees him are on interviews with Caesar Flickerman. On the first interview, Peeta looks healthy and he is calling for a cease fire because if the war does not stop, it could be the end of all living things and how he feels about the rebels, Katniss and being in The Hunger Games. Caesar tries to make Peeta as comfortable as possible. However, the interview is cut short because Peeta asks to go back to his cell because of the comments Caesar is making about Katniss and her in the rebellion. In the second interview, Peeta looks ill and 15 pounds thinner. Caesar asks Peeta about the rumors of Katniss shooting a propo (a propo is a message, footage, advertisement and interviews rom the rebels except some were from the Capitol too) and Peeta says that she probably does not know what they're doing to her and not to trust them, and he asks Katniss to find out what they are doing. In the third interview, Peeta warns others that District 13 will be bombed in the morning by the Capitol by saying, "You in 13....dead by morning!" In punishment, Peeta is beaten and his blood is splattered all over the screen. In the middle of Katniss shooting a propo, Katniss has a mental breakdown because she knows that the Capitol is using Peeta, torturing him to break her, so that the rebellion would stop and the Capitol would regain power..which is a VERY bad thing. And of course, the first time that Katniss gets to see Peeta in person is when she visits him in the Capitol and he tries to strangle her. That is because Peeta got hijacked by the Capitol (like brainwashing), and Peeta's memories of Katniss are distorted in life threatening ways, which makes him very hysterical and unstable. He thinks that Katniss is a mutt created by the Capitol to destroy him, who tried to kill him before, and killed all of his friends and family. He thinks that Katniss is responsible for the bombing of District 12. He lashes out in fits of rage, retreats into his own head, uses the power of speech (temporarily), and cannot tell what is real and what is not, and even argues with himself as if he is two different people. He can only be treated by anyone that he knew before so that he could not trigger anything harmful. Delly Cartwright was the only one who was able to make contact with him in the beginning, and they share childhood memories. He shouts that Katniss is a mutt and blames her for District 12 being destroyed. Peeta says he remembers Mr. Everdeen singing "The Hanging Tree" every time Mr. Everdeen passed Peeta's bakery when he was young. After that, Katniss tries to avoid Peeta and blames him for all of her problems, until Haymitch tells her that if she were hijacked, Peeta would try to save her, which makes Katniss feel guilty.
