Sooo basically Beatrice (changes her name to Tris later on) is 16, just like her brother, Caleb.
In the country that they live in, there are five factions. Each faction has it's own specialty:
Candor (Honesty), Amity (Peaceful), Abnegation (Selflessness), Erudite (Intelligence), and Dauntless (Bravery). Beatrice and Caleb originate from Abnegation.
16 is a very important age in their country. Every 16 year old has to take a test called an Aptitude Test. The Aptitude Test tells determines which faction you will live in for the rest of your life. In the aptitude test, you are put into simulations and your actions reveal parts of your personality, which can determine what faction you will be in. Surprisingly, Tris does not fit into any faction. She has an equal aptitude for three factions: Erudite, Abnegation and Dauntless. Therefore, this means that she is a Divergent. Being a Divergent is very very dangerous and rare and you can not tell ANYONE in the world that you are a Divergent.
The next day is the Choosing Ceremony, where the sixteen year olds choose factions from their choice(s) based on their Aptitude Test Results. To choose a faction, you have to spill blood over the bowl that represents the faction that you choose. Glass for Candor, Water for Erudite, Soil for Amity, Lit Coals for Dauntless, and Gray Stones for Abnegation. Surprisingly, Caleb chooses Erudite, which is an enemy faction to Abnegation and Tris always knew that Caleb was right for Abnegation. He is NEVER selfish. Tris feels even worse when she splatters her blood over the Dauntless bowl, making her parents living without their children. Tris most likely will never see Caleb again, but will see her parents on visiting days. But in order to stay in Dauntless, Tris has to pass training, otherwise she will be factionless (basically your job will be like a custodian or something.........). Tris meets new friends such as Christina, Will, Al. Tris meets some enemies such as Drew, Peter and Molly. And even develops a big love interest on Tobias 'Four', who is two years older than Tris and ran away from his original faction, Abnegation, to Dauntless to escape his abusive father. Even Four still annoys Tris sometimes, she still has a huge crush on him...
The book is full of action and romance <3
